Cover date 1 April 1978: 2000AD (prog 58)
Through Frank Hampson in the original Eagle, Ian Kennedy in the later Eagle, Dave Gibbons here in 2000AD, and several other brilliant artists, Dan Dare must rank as one of British comics’ greatest front cover stars.
This particular thriller is cover-dated 1 April 1978.
The 2000AD incarnation of Dan Dare, written at this stage by Chris Lowder, was a tougher, brawnier adventure than the original Eagle tales.
Dan’s crew in this serial, ‘Waterworld’, included the ill-fated Parkhouse and Moore, presumably named after the British artist and writer Steves.
Prog 58 includes a Tharg’s Future Shocks story, ‘Juggernaut’, drawn by Garry Leach, who sadly died a few days ago. Rebellion posted this tribute to Garry https://2000ad.com/news/garry-leach-1954-2022/?mc_cid=9e3e1eaf94&mc_eid=314c006fb3 describing him as ‘one of the artists who helped define 2000AD’s first golden age.’
