Cover date 31 March 1979: Misty
‘This village is scared of the night. We all lock ourselves away, we have to. It’s - it’s the curse of the wolf.’
The one-off tale drawn by John Richardson in Misty cover dated 31 March 1979 is a proper English Gothic chiller.
British kids’ comics in the late 70s drew freely on ideas from popular adult movies and TV shows, however dark - killer sharks, vampires, violent cops, westerns, war - with little concession to the younger audience beyond softer language and putting children in the leading roles.
Go back to the village at night? Are you crazy, Myra?
The Curse of the Wolf is a great fusion of Hammer-style werewolves and the cursed lonely village trope. Short, yes, generic, yes, but I bet these four pages stuck in the minds and imaginations of many readers. Misty was fab.
