On this day, 12 July 1980 … The gloves were on for Shiner in this week’s Whizzer and Chips as he took to the boxing ring against Polish opponent Jim Stokanalawowski, but the gloves were well and truly off for Whizz-kids and Chip-ites alike during this period of Whizzer and Chips. The letters pages of both comics were almost entirely aimed at poking fun at the other, and there was a regular Whizz-kid v Chip-ite/Chip-ite v Whizz-kid two-part comic strip in which a reader from each gang tried to get one over on his rival. The comic’s packed with fun and great art, and a change of artist on a couple of strips from my time as a reader: Jack Edward Oliver was by now doing great work on The Champ, and Tom Williams brought a slinkier vibe to Sid Burgon’s creation Hit Kid.

And there’s an Ayatollah joke on the Chip-ite letters page. Blimey.
