On this day, 5 November 1977: Whoopee!
On this day, 5 November 1977 … Remember, remember … sparklers, hot dogs, Skyrockets, Catherine Wheels, the smell of sulfur and freaky-looking Guys. I haven’t been to a Bonfire Night for a few years now. They used to have gatherings in the little village in which I grew up but I think all the action has switched to the bigger towns now and some of the magic has been lost along the way. Another of my memories is this Brian Walker-drawn Guy Fawkes mask from Whoopee! I didn’t take Whoopee! at the time so it must have been one, or more than one, of the other kids in my village who had cut it out and stuck it on card.
This poster was actually in the middle pages of the previous week’s comic (dated 29 October) but to keep with the form of the blog I’ve scanned the issue cover-dated 5 November 1977 as that’s the one my pals and others would have been reading in the week leading up to Bonfire Night. As well as the usual line-up – this was a classic period for the comic – watch out for a superb World-wide Weirdies from Ken Reid and brilliant advertisements for Wagon Wheels and Fourth Doctor Crosse & Blackwell baked beans.
Finally, an important public information warning from a young Gillian Taylforth. Stay safe tonight!
