16 August 1975: Monster Fun

There bain’t no such thing as a better word to have on the front cover of your comic than ‘bain’t’.

Cover art by Robert Nixon.

Monster Fun existed as a standalone publication for only a year and a half in the mid-1970s, but its legacy has lasted much longer. Its merge into Buster provided the ‘senior’ comic with a number of memorable characters including Kid Kong (art by Nixon), X-Ray Specs (Mike Lacey) and Mummy’s Boy (Norman Mansbridge).

And recently the monster mag has been reanimated for a new young audience by Rebellion.

It’s generally considered that the best thing about Monster Fun was the Badtime Bedtime Story mini-comic occupying its centre eight pages, Leo Baxendale originated this madcap idea – see the scans below of his Davey Jones story from this very issue. Astonishing, brilliant comics.

Here are four more little monsters from 1975. Does anyone know what Andrew Wilks, Mark Cornell, David Hughes or Elspeth Macdonald are up to today?
