Pursuit of the Puzzler
On Facebook, Dermot MacLennan asked me for memories of a Whizzer and Chips serial called Pursuit of the Puzzler. I've looked up some back issues and it looks like quite the tale, running over 82 weeks from Jan 71 to July 72. Here are three of the episodes - part 2 from 9 January 1971, a mid-story episode from 30 October 1971, and the final episode from 29 July 1972. Art by Mike White.
The story follows Johnny and Jenny Higson’s quest to identify the mysterious Puzzler villain, by finding 12 pieces of a jigsaw that would reveal his face. The title panel of each week’s episode showed the progress of the jigsaw so far.
Puzzle-fans beware: the final couple of images contain SPOILERS! ‘And I would have got away with it if it wasn’t for those accursed Higsons!’ Lovely stuff.
The sequel, Revenge of the Puzzler, started the following week.
