Classic cover artists: Sandy James
Aaaaeee! Sandy James draw heap big muscle men. Which made him the ideal artist for Tiger's indigenous American wrestling adventurer, Johnny Cougar throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. Sandy's bulky torsos and glistening skin tones made him a favourite on this strip and led to him producing many Cougar covers. I wonder how many kids read these while sitting in front of ITV wrestling shows on a Saturday afternoon.
Sandy's covers were always crowd-pleasers and, later in the 1980s, he was commissioned for a long run of front and back page spreads for the cover of toy tie-in title MASK. He always came up with something eye-catching and surprising, often playing with the conventions of comic design to have the hero agents of MASK and the villains of VENOM talking direct to the reader.
