On this day, 15 February 1986: Roy of the Rovers

#OnThisDay 15 February 1986 ... Goalkeeper was one of Roy of the Rovers' longer-running serials, following the fortunes of shot-stopper Rick Stewart, and was a sequel to The Safest Hands in Soccer, which starred Rick's dad Gordon Stewart. Goalkeeper opened with the rather shocking plane-crash death of Gordon, leaving Rick to build his own career in the shadow of his father.

Both stories were written by Gil Page, the managing editor of IPC's sports and adventure department, whose responsibilities included travelling the world in search of artistic talent to suit the publisher's output. One such talent was the Argentinian artist Osvaldo Torta, who would illustrate both Goalkeeper and The Safest Hands in Soccer. Thank you Barrie Tomlinson for confirming the creator details.
