On this day, 21 January 1978: Whoopee!

On this day, 21 January 1978 … Whoopee! circa 1978 is the one that got away for me. I was reading Cheeky and Whizzer and Chips at this time – both great comics but I wish I’d known then what a great read could be found in Whoopee! There’s just something a little bit off-the-leash about the likes of Sweeny Toddler, Frankie Stein, Scared-stiff Sam, Bumpkin Billionaires, Smiler and Supermum – a craziness in either the storytelling or the artwork that has me chuckling even as I read them today. With an added dash of comic gothic horror in Ken Reid’s weekly World-wide Weirdies, the scans below are examples of a true seventies gem.
