On this day, 16 June 1984: Scream!
On this day, 16 June 1984 … Diabolical dreadfulness from the depths haunt the pages of the thirteenth issue of Scream! Whether by coincidence or dastardly design, there’s a definite wartery theme to this edition, snipping off with The Thirteenth Floor’s giant crab claws on the lovely Jose Ortiz cover and wading in deeper with the first part of new Library of Death serial ‘Sea Beast!’, the story of a undertaker’s apprentice Billy White’s voyage to a burial at sea in Tales from the Grave, and a Jaws-tastic first part of Ghastly McNasty’s ‘Monsters of the Deep!’ poster series.
Beyond the seas, there’s so much more to enjoy in this classic comic – sadly the third last issue to be published before a printers’ strike would lead to Scream! vanishing from the shelves for ever (at least as an independent title). Hideous Uncle Terry and Kenny’s plight continues in the excellent Monster serial, The Dracula File revisit the evil count’s battles with nineteenth-century vampire-hunter Alexander Quinn, and there’s a deliciously-spooky episode of The Nightcomers as Rick and Beth Rogan fight a disembodied, dessicated hand while investigating the death of their parents at Raven’s Meet House.
