On this day, 15 February 1975: Whoopee! and Shiver and Shake
Cover artwork (Toy Boy): Terry Bave
On this day, 15 February 1975 … Rather like Shiver and Shake itself, Whoopee! after subsuming Shiver and Shake several months previously was still a whole of two slightly ill-fitting halves. The Whoopee! part of the comic is fairly innocent in tone, with fun-stars such as Toy Boy, Daisy Jones’ Locket, Willy Worry, Mum’s the Word and Lolly Pop, while the ‘Shiver Section’ sat in the middle, like a grimoire lurking inside a Ladybird book, offering darker fun through the likes of Evil Eye, Fun-Fear, ‘Orrible Hole and Scream Inn. One wonders whether a well-meaning aunt or uncle who might have bought the comic for a child on the basis of its engaging Cover Quiz puzzle would have thought twice if they’d seen Ken Reid’s Blackghoul Tower – surely one of the most disturbing of all his World-wide Weirdies – on the centre pages.
